Look, you’re busy. I’m busy. I’ve got to worry about the economy, and figure out how I’m going to hide from mandatory Swine Flu inoculations. I don’t even have time to sue the government, though I suspect I’d like to.

I have a stack of new records to listen to and then write 5,000 words each on why you should: A. Like them. B. Loathe them. C. Not give a shit. Since ‘C’ is the most likely scenario (is not giving a shit a scenario?) I’ve decided to boil down several into 140 words or less. That way you can copy and paste on your Twitter feed. Feel free to take credit for any and all… I’ll be in hiding and they’ll take you away instead. Sucker.

Atlas Sound “Logos”

Deerhunter leader new solo. The cover says much. A shirtless Cox face bathed in heavenly light. Music sounds like that light.

Bri Blahg… 9/4/09 Music News: Man Retires From Silicon Valley, Joins Stooges

4 09 2009

NIN Hollywood Show Features Gary Numan

Argh! Nine Inch Nails keep pulling up inspired guests on their farewell tour and I’m not there to dig it. Wednesday in LA it was industrial music pioneer and ace pilot Gary Numan. “Cars” was an obvious choice. Even better was “Metal.” Numan I fear is largely forgotten, but for Reznor he is a huge influence. Check out Numan’s “Metal”:

So I Was Sitting In The Parking Lot Of A Dentist Office

That’s what Stooges guitar player James Williamson told Rolling Stone of Iggy’s invitation to rejoin the band. He was getting ready to see the dentist when Iggy rang him up.

Williamson left music in 1974, and eventually ended up in a shitty little no future business called personal computers. It almost sounds like a movie:

“I was about to take an early retirement from my job in Silicon Valley, so I figured ‘What the hell, let’s do it.”

Williamson replaces Ron Asheton who died of a heart attack this past winter. James was in the band for their 1973 smokin’ shoot out “Raw Power.”

Arctic Monkeys "Humbug"

As I write today I’ve fired up the new Arctic Monkeys record “Humbug” . Taking a quick peek at the Amazon reviews I’d say some are put off by their new, more downcast and heavier direction. I like the first track “My Propeller.” Slower, but still with some good groove. Maybe I dig it more than their old stuff because I’m not very good “On The Dance Floor.”

The LA County Coroner has ruled Michael Jackson’s death a homicide. It seems this doctor was bound and determined to get Jacko to go to sleep one way or another. I know we’d like to believe doctors always have our best interests at heart, and usually they do. My grandmother had a Doctor Feelgood. He kept her in pills even after she overdosed several times. Eventually he went down for doing this to multiple patients.

Passion Pit @ Bonnaroo 2009 photo by Brian Phillips

Passion Pit “The Reeling”

Hard to believe Bonnaroo started a week ago already. For one guy it ended. Apparently clean up crews found a body on Tuesday…. almost 48 hours after the festival ended. Damn. Didn’t anyone wonder where he went?

“Hey where’s Bill?”

“I think he went to get a burrito or something.”

“When was that?”

“Um, like two days ago during Phish.”

Let’s try to do better at Lollapalooza people. Have a buddy system.

The Lollapalooza performance schedule is out. Let’s lace up the combat boots and stomp right in and see if we can find anything to do the first full weekend of August in Chicago’s Grant Park. Here’s some things I’m looking forward to.

Bri Blahg Bonnaroo Thursday And Friday

8 05 2009

Veteran Bonnaroo goers will notice some subtle changes for the ’09 Festival. Changes for the better I think. We’ll hit those as we go through some of the highlights.

Thursday

Early arrivals will be rewarded for their punctuality. White Rabbits stop off at The ‘Roo behind their great new record “It’s Frightening.” Their 6:45 set kicks off an evening of indie rock fans running back and forth from This Tent to That Tent for Portugal. The Man, The Low Anthem, and Passion Pit. Murs and The Knux will have The Other Tent bumpin’ as a hip hop one stop Thursday. The Zac Brown Band fill the frat guy void in That Tent late night. I’d have to go back and look, but I don’t recall the Festival starting with so many strong shows right out of the gate.

Friday

The day is loaded, but if you stay focused (at Bonnaroo?) you can see just about everything. Gomez are always great and they’ll start my day at 12:30 on Which Stage. That venue will be crawling with hipsters all day… what with Animal Collective, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and TV On The Radio following up Gomez.

Kaki King doesn’t come with the name recognition of many on the bill, but she’ll generate a lot of talk. She’s an amazing musician. King is part of a Friday This Tent lineup that includes the equally compelling Grizzly Bear.

Friday afternoon also marks the opening of Bonnaroo’s largest venue. The Reverend Al Green is soul music brothers and sisters. The Hall Of Famer opens for The Beastie Boys at 6pm on The What Stage. I guarantee they’ll be watching from the wings. If Green doesn’t get your blood pumping, you’re dead. After The Beasties make way for Phish. God love ’em I just can’t get too excited myself. Thankfully Bonnaroo has scheduled a few small stage acts for those of us wanting shorter songs and fewer hippies. Frenchmen Phoenix hit the ‘Roo fresh off their Saturday Night Live appearence. Their 10pm set on The Cafe Where Stage conflicts with Justin Townes Earle on The Troo Music Stage. I’ll have to go with Steve’s kid on this one.

Still to come… Saturday and Sunday!

Lollapalooza Lineup Revealed.

21 04 2009

You know there is hope for our economic future. If the dollars are there to pay this lineup then God Bless us all. It’s quite monster yes sir. Lollapalooza announced their 2009 lineup this morning. Depeche Mode, Tool, The Killers, Jane’s Addiction (who are recording with Trent Reznor and may or may not be ready to kill one and other) Beastie Boys and Kings of Leon are your headliners. I can tell that by their font size on Lollapalooza’s official site. With slightly smaller lettering we have Lou Reed, Ben Harper, Snoop Dogg, Andrew Bird, Rise Against, TV On The Radio, and Thievery Corporation.

Some others highlights…. Decemberists, Neko Case, Band Of Horses, Of Montreal, Gomez, Bat For Lashes, Manchester Orchestra, and The Low Anthem. That’s just a sampling. Very strong and eclectic lineup.
