Bri Blahg… Kanye Stabs Self, U2ube, There’s A Pearl Jam App For That… Music News Round Up 10/20/09

Kanye West briefly posted a disturbing Spike Jonze directed short yesterday, and then took it down.

Bonus Coverage. Obviously we don’t have the video, so instead enjoy this instructional film:

Who Says You Tube Doesn’t Have Any Money

This weekend You Tube will stream U2’s Rose Bowl show free. Who wants to take bets on their server crashing.

Pearl Jam Bootleg App

Bootleg is a strong word since the band has teamed with Verizon for the new Blackberry do-hicky. You’ll get three live tracks from every remaining show on the tour.

Bri Blahg… Mission Of Burma and No Age Drop Some Noise On My Head Thank You

12 10 2009

Mission Of Burma's "The Sound The Speed The Light"

Mission Of Burma “The Sound The Speed The Light

Mission Of Burma didn’t reunite seven years ago for money. Relatively speaking there probably isn’t much of that. Praise? I doubt it. They’ve always had plenty of the critical nature. There wasn’t really any unfinished business per se. The band’s output since ending their 20 year break has been great, but not what I’d term a great leap. As they were in 1981, Mission Of Burma are still the best game in town if you’re looking to split the difference between artiness and ass kicking. Dropping last week on Matador “The Sound, The Speed, The Light” is more than anything else a reaffirmation of what makes Mission Of Burma so damned great.

No Age's "Losing Feeling" e.p.

No Age “Losing Feeling” E.P.

I think about No Age a lot like I think about Sebadoh. Both tour/toured like dogs, but never seem to put much thought into the live presentation. That’s not to say they were awful shows, just disappointing in light of how consistently great their records are.

No Age’s all too brief Losing Feeling e.p. will do nothing I’m sure to change that. Glorious noise shoots, careens, and bounces all over the place. It’s as loud and disorienting as it is pretty, and for the So Cal duo, probably impossible to pull off live.

Bri Blahg: What Kanye Should Have Done. Music News Round Up 9/14/09

This Just In: Kanye West Is Kind Of An Asshole

Someday I’ll look so stinking old that no one will bother to ask me if I watched The MTV Video Music Awards. I suppose I should feel good that it hasn’t happened yet. The answer of course is no. Why?

1. Are you kidding me?

2. Bears/Packers

3. I was out of Jim Beam.

This morning the blahgspere, twitspere, fakebookspere, etc are all in a spit flying frenzy about Kanye West. It seems he jumped on stage and dissed Taylor Swift about winning some damn award or another.

I will tell you this; Bears fans would have been pleased if Kanye had grabbed the ball from Jay Cutler last night instead. Cripes was he awful. Since I didn’t watch, here then is EMO GIRL with his commentary.

hit the jump for the sad, sad video…

Bri Blahg… 9/2 Music News Round Up: Charlie Watts Quits Eminem’s Small Penis Or Why Punctuation Is Important

2 09 2009

Watts Leaves Stones Under Own Power

Can you have The Rolling Stones without Charlie Watts? Spin reports that after 47 years Watts is walking away from the kit. According to the magazine’s website Charlie Drayton from Keith’s solo band The X-Pensive Winos will replace. Drayton’s a good drummer, but perhaps it’s time for The Stones to hang ’em up. I’m sure the band has an excellent pension.

Cripes The Stones were something though weren’t they?

Kings Of Leon @ Lollapalooza by Gary Orr

The Kings Of Leon are prepping a live DVD and remix album for the fall. Justin Timberlake, Lykke Li, and Mark Ronson will be among the contributors. Hmmm. I guess I’ll wait to hear them. Well, except for the contribution from Linkin Park. I’m pretty sure that’ll suck.

Bauhaus’ Peter Murphy guested on three songs at last night’s Nine Inch Nails show. Kanye was there.

Bri Blahg… Giant Heat Stroked Lollapalooza Wrap Up

10 08 2009

by Brian Phillips (@BrianBlahg)

And that’s it. Lollapalooza 2009 is history. We saw a little of everything this weekend. I swear it was down right chilly Friday. It was raining I know that. Saturday and Sunday were different stories. We got a good lather going by the end of the weekend. Lollapalooza adjusted though. Yesterday the Chicago Fire Department brought in a truck with a giant fan on top to spray mist. This ain’t a bad town if the fire department has a damn misting truck. I’m going to roll through some highlights here. I’m one man though and there’s so much I missed. I saw quite a lot too.

I raced to the BMI stage just in time to catch a wisp of April Smith. She’s somethin’, and a mean dresser too. Smith was kind enough to take us on a tour of the site seeing as how we just got there and all. April received as much as she gave in the form of Lobster Corn Dogs.

After watching nine year old Yuto Miyazawa play “Paranoid” by Sabbath on the Kidzapalooza stage a late Portland, Oregon band Hockey tried to make it work on The Playstation Stage. Unfortunately the power went out and they couldn’t get through their first number. The men were good sports in the media area later and told us about how Bruce Springsteen doesn’t pay attention when you meet him.

Bri Blahg… Lollapalooza Saturday…. Late Afternoon. Bum Shoulders and Scottish Burrs.

Glasvegas' James Allan

Brothers James and Rab Allan of Mercury Prize nominated Glasvegas drifted by for an interview mid afternoon Saturday. The lads didn’t seem impressed by the thought of winning the prestigious award. The lightning fast Nick Jones and Dan Hoffman have already put together a piece here. We also have some other video of the boys questioning the modesty of their charming drummer Caroline McKay. “Don’t be fooled,” said James, “she’ll f%$# anything that moves.” I’m pretty sure they were just taking the piss out of her as they say. We’ll put that video up soon. I caught part of Glasvegas’ set late afternoon. At SXSW they didn’t do much for me, but I have to say as I listen to the record more their Jesus And Mary Chain meets Phil Spector and Frankie Valli sound is growing on me.
