Bri Blahg… Them Crooked Vultures To Drop Album, Lil Wayne To Drop Trow. Music News Round Up 10/22/09

Them Crooked Vultures Ready To Drop Record

A single comes next week, the album on November 17th. This entire process has been handled perfectly. The band has avoided empty hype and just played shows.

There’s No Cough Syrup In Prison

In New York City they don’t fuck around when it comes to guns. Ask Plaxico Burress about that. Looking at hard time for his weapons rap it appears Lil Wayne is ready to plea out and do eight months. It’ll help his career I’m sure. If I were the prosecutor I would make a deal forcing Wayne to agree never to release “Rebirth.”

What, Bruce Wasn’t Available?

For opening the new Jets/Giants stadium the wish list of performers was probably two deep. Since Bruce couldn’t do it, it has to be  Bon Jovi. Stupid Jersey people.

Bonus Coverage. Best band from New Jersey that’s not Bruce? Smithereens!

Bri Blahg… Don’t Mess With Jemima, Dr. Jack White, And A Diddy Lockdown. Music News Round Up 10/19/09

by Brian Phillips (@BrianBlahg)

You Got Beat Up By A Girl! You Got Beat Up By A Girl!

Don’t mess with ex-Be Your Own Pet front woman Jemima Pearl. A heckler found out the hard way. If he was flicking lit cigarettes at her he had it coming. (Scroll down a bit for her side of the story)

Jack White Delivers University Lecture

Jack White was also made an honorary member of Ireland’s Trinity College Philosophical Society, joining the likes of Bram Stoker and Oscar Wilde. Next… The UN right?

MGMT Work On New Record, Take Up Hobby

They’ve been surfing.

Tegan And Sara Ready Sixth Album

Death Cab’s Chris Walla is lending a hand.

Magic Numbers Offer Up Free Track

Catch up with what the pair of brothers and sisters have been up to.

Bonus Coverage. Here’s a piece we did on the band a couple of years back for our TV show:

Wavves Reschedule Drug Shows

Remember when the asshole from Wavves took way too many drugs and mumbled through a festival appearance in Spain, and then canceled the UK tour? Yeah well they’re ready to try again. Good luck with that.

Bonus Coverage. In case you missed our confab at SXSW. Strange to say the least:

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Bri Blahg… 9/3 News Round Up: Only The Stones Remain

3 09 2009

Before I Crap On Everything, Here’s Something Good

I don’t mean to be such downer, I’ve just been involved in the music business for way to stinking long I think. To show that I’m not incapable of finding something to say nice things about, here’s St. Vincent on Jimmy Kimmel last night. This is a wonderfully disorienting song for a late night talk show don’t you think?

Bonus! Our SXSW Confab With St. Vincent

Let’s talk about follow up albums to albums that aren’t out yet (officially)

3 09 2009

by Nick Jones (@NickJones82)

Kid Cudi chats with the UK’s Hip Hop Chronicle about “Man on the Moon: The End of the Day“. Good stuff. Can’t wait for this album to drop in the States on 9.15.

Cudder also chats about his next album and some possible collaborations for a compilation album. I wasn’t surprised by names like Pharrell, Chad Hugo, Kenna, Chip the Ripper, and even MGMT (who are featured on Man on the Moon.) But let these sink in, Green Day, The Killers, The Thrills, and my personal favorite Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses. Apparently they’re going to “vibe out” in North Carolina. I’m excited to see creativity coming back to Hip Hop.

And in case you thought Jay-Z was getting a bit lazy, he’s currently working on his next album. Hear about it after the jump…

Echo, Black Keys highlight APW day 3

Somehow I managed to walk out of the final day at All Points West muddier than I did after spending a week camping at Bonnaroo. Which is quite the accomplishment, I must say, but truly Jersey City’s Liberty State Park had transformed into one giant, smelly, sinking mud pit that was almost impossible to navigate after a downpour finished off the festival grounds earlier in the day.

But the early day rain showers weren’t enough to cancel the event, and although entrance to the festival was delayed, things quickly got back on schedule once the skies cleared later in the afternoon (although Steel Train and the Gaslight Anthem were both knocked from the lineup. Bummer).

Best o’ Bonnaroo

16 06 2009

By Jill Menze (@JillMenze)

With this being my first Bonnaroo and all, I obviously have no prior event to compare it to. What I do know, though, is that everyone I’ve talked to who has attended in years past also had a blast this weekend, so I suppose that says something about the success of this installment.

What Stage, Bonnaroo 2009

I can’t say I saw a band or artist play a sub par set, aside from my own mood or disposition causing me to enjoy something less than I should have, and only that happened maybe twice (sorry, Animal Collective and Band of Horses). Performances by reliable favorites like Wilco, Jenny Lewis and Bruce Springsteen were solid and filled with surprises, while catching my first live shows from old favs like the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy were as good as if not better than what I always expected. Then there were new acts like Phoenix and Dirty Projectors, who proved why they’re so buzzed-about to begin with, the latter converting me to a fan (live, at least) after I showed up ready to criticize.

Outside of the music, just being on the Bonnaroo festival grounds is an experience unto itself. It was great to see good friends, meet new ones and be a part of a collective vibe (however substance-enhanced) that was so chill, friendly and relaxed. It was a weekend I won’t be forgetting any time soon, and here are some of the highlights:

Best & Worst after the jump…
