Bri Blahg… Tyler In Trouble? Jacko’s Doctor Wants Paid, More Blackroc Leaks. Music News Round Up 11/18/09

Aerosmith Fear For Tyler

As I suspected, band members are very concerned that their (former?) singer is using again. I’ll say this, the Toxic Twin is one passive-aggressive dude.

Jacko’s Alleged Doctor Feelgood Says He May Sue AEG

Doctor Conrad Murray says the producers of Michael Jackson’s ill fated “This Is It” Tour owe him 300 Large. I wonder if he’s on medication for his huge clanging balls.

More Blackroc Tracks Leaked

Pitchfork has the details. If you’re not up on this one…. it’s The Black Keys and a host of hip hop collaborators. The stuff I’ve heard is quite good.

How’s The Record Business Working Out For Ya?

It really isn’t news anymore. The old line record business is a hulking, smoldering wreck. Just ask the geniuses who bought up EMI. Don’t be confused though… Just because lumbering dinosaurs like EMI are sinking into the tar pits, doesn’t mean the music business as a whole is dead. Quite to the contrary, a new, more lucrative model for artists is emerging.

Bonus Coverage. This one goes out to you EMI:

Velvets To Appear At Library

Well it ain’t Max’s Kansas City, but it does sound interesting. Velvet Underground members Lou Reed, Maureen Tucker, and Doug Yule (he replaced John Cale) will be part of a panel discussion on the band and their music at The New York Public Library.

Bonus Coverage. $26 In My Hand:

Jay Z, Will And Jada Pinkett Smith Fund Fela Musical

I’m not much for musical theater myself, but this Broadway production about Nigerian Afro Beat legend Fela Kuti sounds interesting. Some big names financed the project.

“Teacher Don’t Teach Me No Nonsense:”

Faces To Tour Without Rod Stewart

Looks that way anyway. You need Rod Stewart for this don’t you?

New Brian Jonestown Massacre Coming? It Would Seem

You can sample “Who Killed Sgt. Pepper” here. It’s mind bending as you might expect.

Rogue Wave Finish New Record

The album, produced in Oxford, Mississippi with Dennis Herring will be out next March. If it’s as good as their last one I’m in. Good band.

The Olympics Of Cool

Even if the luge and team short track speed skating aren’t your thing, the music lineup for next February’s Winter Olympics in Vancouver is top notch and surprisingly adventurous.

My New Dream. Renew My Vows With Kim Gordon Officiating

Sonic Youth made their bizarre appearance on Gossip Girl this week. Full disclosure. I’ve never watched Gossip Girl and have no stinking clue what the show is about. I rather like my life that way. It seems there was a wedding and Kim Gordon played an internet certified minister. After the ceremony the band played an unplugged version of “Star Power.” When my wife and I are ready to get all squishy and renew our vows, I want Kim Gordon to do ours too. (editor’s note. Bri has trouble separating fantasy from reality. We’re pretty certain Kim Gordon is not actually an ordained minister.) They’ve done a nice job scrubbing the scene from You Tube, but you can watch it here.

Bonus Coverage. “Star Power” as God intended:

Bri Blahg… Dylan Sells Out To Bankers, Diddy Is The Banker, Kanye Does The Chicken Fit. Music News Round Up 9/30/09

Dude Palo Alto ’73

You ever heard of Wolfgang’s Vault? Nah me neither. If you’re a hardcore Dead Head you probably have. With legal issues straightened out a trove of good (Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Aretha Franklin, Lou Reed, Ramones, etc) bad (Chicago, Hall and Oates) and Weird (Twisted Sister?) are hitting the virtual market.

Bonus Coverage. I’ll be honest, up until a couple of years ago I wasn’t much for The Dead. Then I saw Phil Lesh at Bonnaroo (no there were no drugs) and something clicked. Am I hardcore? No I wouldn’t say that, but I’m digging the stuff I bought for the Ipod… The Skull and Bones record etc. One of my favorites is their take on Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried”:

Bri Blahg… Helping People, That’s What I Do. Music News Round Up: 9/9/09

That’s A Good Question Bri

Can you still be gangsta after going on Oprah? In fairness to Jay Z he is promoting his Friday charity concert. To help Jay maintain his hardness, here’s his mugshot courtesy The Smoking Gun:

Jay Z Wishing He Was At A Grizzly Bear Concert

That was snapped by NYPD in 1999 after Jay Z’s arrest on charges he stabbed a record executive. He probably had it coming right.

The Good News Is, I Now Know Who The Hell You Are

Rapper Max B (full disclosure, I had no idea who this guy was until today. See Max B knew exactly what he was doing) had 75 years dropped on his noggin last week for a robbery gone very bad. Bonus irony: It seems Max B had just extricated himself from a bad contract. Don’t worry about Max though, he’s just signed a new long term deal.

Bri Blahg… Giant Heat Stroked Lollapalooza Wrap Up

And that’s it. Lollapalooza 2009 is history. We saw a little of everything this weekend. I swear it was down right chilly Friday. It was raining I know that. Saturday and Sunday were different stories. We got a good lather going by the end of the weekend. Lollapalooza adjusted though. Yesterday the Chicago Fire Department brought in a truck with a giant fan on top to spray mist. This ain’t a bad town if the fire department has a damn misting truck. I’m going to roll through some highlights here. I’m one man though and there’s so much I missed. I saw quite a lot too.

Friday

I raced to the BMI stage just in time to catch a wisp of April Smith. She’s somethin’, and a mean dresser too. Smith was kind enough to take us on a tour of the site seeing as how we just got there and all. April received as much as she gave in the form of Lobster Corn Dogs.

After watching nine year old Yuto Miyazawa play “Paranoid” by Sabbath on the Kidzapalooza stage a late Portland, Oregon band Hockey tried to make it work on The Playstation Stage. Unfortunately the power went out and they couldn’t get through their first number. The men were good sports in the media area later and told us about how Bruce Springsteen doesn’t pay attention when you meet him.

Bri Blahg… Another Bri Pod Countdown

2 07 2009

by Brian Phillips (@BrianBlahg)

Photobucket
Several months ago I started writing columns about what my Ipod played for me on the way to work in the morning. Self absorption? Perhaps…. Still people occasionally ask me to write more. Here then is another installment in our occasional “Bri Pod” series.

1. The Beatles “Two Of Us”

A few weeks back this song came up in a conversation I was having with members of White Rabbits about obscure (being a relative term here) Beatles songs. A lot of their stuff sounds a bit dated, but this simple folk pop tune holds up quite nicely. For all the elegant simplicity of this track, “Let It Be” was the most laborious of The Beatles career as you can read here.

7 more tunes after the jump…
