Bri Blahg… Them Crooked Vultures Hammer The Clods

Them Crooked Vultures debut drops November 17

A couple of decades back the old Polydor record label signed a band called Kingdom Come. When clever FM dj’s of the day played Kingdom Come’s single “Get It On” they sometimes wouldn’t say who the band was, or broadly hint that it was Led Zeppelin in disguise. The phones would ring off the wall. “Dude was that new Led Zepp?” Listening to the song now it all seems ridiculous. Yes they sounded like Led Zeppelin, but only in a two-dimensional, cardboard cutout way. What they lacked of course were chops, good songs, and any sense of mystery and magic. They were a cheap tribute band body snatching wasteoids who never left the parking lot of life’s proverbial War Memorial Coliseum.

This Is It Premieres

The stars turned out in LA. Will I rush out and see it? During football season and The World Series? Not bloody likely.

Or I Could Go To The Killers Movie

Not bloody likely either.

Things Work Out For The Best Says John Paul Jones

John Paul Jones has broken his silence on the aborted Led Zeppelin reunion and says he’s much happier in Them Crooked Vultures regardless.

Bri Blahg… Gall Stones, And Rolling Stones… Music News Round Up 10/27/09

Springsteen Cousin/Road Crew Member Dies Suddenly

Last night’s show in K.C. canceled after the death of Lenny Sullivan. The 36 year old was Bruce’s cousin and assistant tour manager.

Ailing Clapton Drops Out Of Rock Hall Show

Gall stones have sent the legend to the bench. Springsteen was to appear too, but with Sullivan’s death his appearance may be in jeopardy as well.

It’s Not Funny, It’s Sad

They’re calling it Weezer and Weezy… “I Can’t Stop Partying” is Lil Wayne with Weezer , a track from Ratitude, which drops today. I don’t know what Rivers Cuomo is trying to prove. Is it a cynical grab at Top 40 airplay ala Chris Cornell and Timbaland, a passive aggressive swipe at their record company, or just a big joke? My problem with the whole enterprise is that the only people compromising are Weezer. From Lil Wayne, to Kenny G, to Jermaine Dupri… this is the kind of crap these people churn out. Weezer are the ones purposely embracing plastic, two dimensional, hit radio garbage regardless of their motivations.

Bonus Coverage. This is the saddest day for middle aged musicians since Sammy Hagar recorded “Mas Tequila.”

Morrissey Upgraded To Lonely And Miserable

Doctors say Mozz is doing better after fainting on stage over the weekend. Morrissey you see does not “pass out” he faints.

Bonus Coverage. The first thing they do in a revolution is “hang the dj’s:”

Bri Blahg: Music News Round Up For Tuesday September 1, 2009

1 09 2009

Rolling Stone leads with news Them Crooked Vultures have been added to the Austin City Limits bill. If you haven’t been paying attention, that’s the supergroup featuring Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones, Dave Grohl, and Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age.

Sublime are going the Alice In Chains route, replacing a long dead singer and hitting the road. First up is The Smoke Out Festival hosted by Cheech And Chong. Your mileage may vary on Sublime playing a drug themed festival when their singer died from a drug overdose. Cheech and Chong got a lot of mileage out of those stoner movies they made back in the 70’s and 80’s. I love the cheesy announcer guy on this trailer:

Kings Of Leon @ Lollapalooza by Gary Orr

The Kings Of Leon are prepping a live DVD and remix album for the fall. Justin Timberlake, Lykke Li, and Mark Ronson will be among the contributors. Hmmm. I guess I’ll wait to hear them. Well, except for the contribution from Linkin Park. I’m pretty sure that’ll suck.

Bauhaus’ Peter Murphy guested on three songs at last night’s Nine Inch Nails show. Kanye was there.

By far the biggest story of the day is the death of Les Paul. It is impossible to overstate his importance to modern music. Paul was 94. Just below we posted some stuff we shot last fall for Rolling Stone. Guitar heavyweights like Slash and Billy Gibbons gathered in Cleveland late last year to pay tribute to the man himself.

“It Might Get Loud” is the documentary on a the Yalta like summit featuring Jimmy Page, The Edge, and Jack White. Billboard.com reports that in the film Page played some new material he’s been working on. The trailer is pretty cool. I found it on You Tube, but people had gunked it all up so go here instead.
