Bri Blahg… Punches, Divorces, and Bad Wigs. Music News Round Up 10/15/09

Some guy punched Leona Lewis during a UK book signing. Why? Not sure.

Oh My God You Guys

Avril Lavigne has filed for divorce. Isn’t she like 15?

Bonus Coverage. She’s petitioned the court to deny her estranged husband spousal support. That’s ok he doesn’t need the money, he’s in Sum 41. Oh that’s cold Avril.

More bonus coverage. Here’s something to ponder…. Who’s the bigger Canadian music star now? Avril or Anvil?

Bizarro Chart

Some clown named Michael Buble is Number 1. Good for him. Number 2? Kiss! Say what you will, but for some bands the Wal-Mart exclusive is career Viagra. The entire Billboard 200 is here. If you dig down far enough you can find out how much people don’t give a shit about Scarlett Johansson as a singer.

But What About Chris Gaines?!

Garth Brooks says he’s putting on his cowgirdle, and coming out of retirement.

Bonus Coverage. My theory is he’s waited this long to give the public time to forget about Chris Gaines. Think again pardner:

Bri Blahg… Stooges Yes, Kiss Yes, Genesis No… Music News Round Up 9/23/09

23 09 2009

by Brian Phillips (@BrianBlahg)

Kiss, Peppers, Genesis Head Rock Hall Nominees

Longest shot? Probably Kiss, though in my opinion, their influence on what a rock show can be, is incalculable. That said I think the industry sorts holding those votes have always tended to look down their noses at Kiss. Yes Gene is an insufferable, money grubbing pervert. Yes Paul’s chest hair looks like John Holmes’ sex dungeon shag carpet. Sure Peter Criss couldn’t play. Of course their last great song was recorded in 1977. And my God they’ve treated the only true genius in the band Ace Frehley like garbage……. You know what, just induct Ace.

Also nominated…. Red Hot Chili Peppers (don’t ask me, I spent too many years playing them on the radio. If I never hear another Peppers song, that would be more than fine.) Genesis (yeah I guess you have to let them in, but it would be better in my mind to just induct Peter Gabriel for his far more worthwhile solo career. Phil Collins? Do you remember “Sussidio? The prosecution rests) Jimmy Cliff (yes absolutely), The Hollies (great pop band, who probably deserve more respect than they’ve enjoyed) and LL Cool J (“Mama Said Knock You Out” kicks ass, but I’m not sure his career as a whole has been that weighty, though I’ll listen to arguments)

Returning nominees include The Stooges. I’m not saying another word. I’m on record everywhere as saying The Stooges should not only be in, but have their own building out back. Iggy could live there and we could visit. Instead I give you Bonus Coverage:

Yes, “the kids” do seem to enjoy it.

Kid Cudi invades BAPE Store for NYC Fashion Week

11 09 2009

By Jill Menze (@jillmenze)

Waiting for Kid Cudi outside the Bape Store in New York

Waiting for Kid Cudi outside the BAPE Store in New York

But dude was hella late. Yesterday trusty Palestra Music producer Nick Jones caught wind of the hip-hop artist’s store appearance via Twitter, so I went down to SoHo to check it out. The tweet said Kid Cudi would be at the BAPE Store at 6 p.m., so I showed up around 6:15 and was greeted by a huge crowd of kids and Cudi look-a-likes anxiously awaiting his arrival. No one was sure if he was performing or if it was just to unveil a new T-shirt design, so there was a lot of confusion, compounded by the fact that many an Escalade drove by over the next hour, none of which contained the rapper.

I cut in line, cause, why not, and got caught, yelled at, and sent to the end. Cudi finally arrived to a camera phone-toting, hyseteric mass (video below via solesirius) and went into the store, but by that point I had to bounce so I’m not exactly sure what went down inside. They still weren’t letting the public in at that time, though. In any case, not a whole lot to report, but here’s a picture of shoes. Cudi fans got some nice kicks.

Bri Blahg… 9/3 News Round Up: Only The Stones Remain

3 09 2009

by Brian Phillips (@BrianBlahg)

Before I Crap On Everything, Here’s Something Good

I don’t mean to be such downer, I’ve just been involved in the music business for way to stinking long I think. To show that I’m not incapable of finding something to say nice things about, here’s St. Vincent on Jimmy Kimmel last night. This is a wonderfully disorienting song for a late night talk show don’t you think?

Bonus! Our SXSW Confab With St. Vincent

Let’s talk about follow up albums to albums that aren’t out yet (officially)

3 09 2009

by Nick Jones (@NickJones82)

Kid Cudi chats with the UK’s Hip Hop Chronicle about “Man on the Moon: The End of the Day“. Good stuff. Can’t wait for this album to drop in the States on 9.15.

Cudder also chats about his next album and some possible collaborations for a compilation album. I wasn’t surprised by names like Pharrell, Chad Hugo, Kenna, Chip the Ripper, and even MGMT (who are featured on Man on the Moon.) But let these sink in, Green Day, The Killers, The Thrills, and my personal favorite Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses. Apparently they’re going to “vibe out” in North Carolina. I’m excited to see creativity coming back to Hip Hop.

And in case you thought Jay-Z was getting a bit lazy, he’s currently working on his next album. Hear about it after the jump…

High Times interviews Kid Cudi

28 08 2009

by Nick Jones (@NickJones82)

This is great. I’m not sure why they “posterized” the video, but I’ve got a guess (cough, cough). That said, it does make the clouds of smoke Cudi is blowing look way cooler. I don’t know how I missed this, but apparently Big Snoop Dogg has a feature on Kid Cudi’s Man On The Moon record (due out 9.15)

Senior Cultivation Editor Danny Danko and ‘The Lonely Stoner’ enjoy a spliff of sour diesel and some conversation.Read the entire Kid Cudi interview in the October 2009 Issue of HIGH TIMES Magazine.

Bri Blahg… Lollapalooza 2009 Schedule Out

Passion Pit @ Bonnaroo 2009 photo by Brian Phillips

Passion Pit “The Reeling”

Hard to believe Bonnaroo started a week ago already. For one guy it ended. Apparently clean up crews found a body on Tuesday…. almost 48 hours after the festival ended. Damn. Didn’t anyone wonder where he went?

“Hey where’s Bill?”

“I think he went to get a burrito or something.”

“When was that?”

“Um, like two days ago during Phish.”

Let’s try to do better at Lollapalooza people. Have a buddy system.

The Lollapalooza performance schedule is out. Let’s lace up the combat boots and stomp right in and see if we can find anything to do the first full weekend of August in Chicago’s Grant Park. Here’s some things I’m looking forward to.
