Slayer/Megadeth Announce “American Carnage”

The winter tour features blocks of $10.00 tickets to reflect what they call 1991 prices. Let that roll around in your skull for a moment. Yes concert tickets have gone up that much. Anyway kudos to them.

Bonus Coverage. Megadeth’s disturbing “99 Ways To Die.” Keep out of reach of children:

PIL’s Future? It’s Up To You.

John Lydon says Public Image Limited will record if their comeback tour is successful. Sounds fair.

The Best? Really? Seriously?

NME says The Strokes debut album is the best of the waning decade. It’s good, but the best?

Bonus Coverage. Let me just pull a random record out of my ass that I think is better:

Cribs Announce Tour With Marr

I was under the impression The Cribs LA show with Johnny Marr was a one off. Not so fast!

Bonus Coverage. The Cribs latest with Johnny Marr in the band:

Lizard King Poses For Fan Picture…. In 1997

Jim Morrison's 1997 Encore

I know your mileage will vary on this one…. I’m a natural born skeptic myself…. That said it’s pretty creepy.

Bonus Coverage:

Flaming Lips To Do Dark Side With Henry Rollins

The follow up to The Flaming Lips new and very Floydish “Embryonic” is ambitious to say the least. The band is planning to cover Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side Of The Moon” with guests Henry Rollins and Peaches.

Bri Blahg… Pissed Jeans “King Of Jeans.” The Art Of Falling Apart

8 09 2009

by Brian Phillips (@BrianBlahg)

Pissed Jeans "King Of Jeans"

I used to get this feeling listening to The Butthole Surfers. The thrill of hearing a band with a whole bunch of shady ideas trying like hell to kill them with a shovel and shove them in a burlap sack. If they managed to keep them somewhat contained, they’d have a song like “Who Was In My Room Last Night.” Sometimes though the sack would bounce off the back of the pick up truck, burst open on the berm, and you’d have “The Shah Sleeps In Lee Harvey’s Grave” or the entire “Hairway To Steven” album.

Where the Surfers would laugh as they attempted to shove a wet dirty finger in your ear, their contemporaries The Jesus Lizard (and before that front man David Yow along with David Wm. Sims were in the great Scratch Acid) put a mud caked boot there instead. Relentless and manic, The Jesus Lizard were always everything you wanted to say and how you wished you could say it. Both bands signed to Capitol in the 90’s too, and the Surfers even managed to have somewhat of a hit album in “Electric Larryland.” Both bands are also back together in 2009, and are said to be attracting bigger crowds than they ever did then. It remains to be seen if Pennsylvania’s Pissed Jeans are able to do the same.

Bri Blahg… Pitchfork Festival Preview

14 07 2009

by Brian Phillips (@BrianBlahg)

The Jesus Lizard

The Pitchfork Music Festival is this weekend at Chicago’s Union Park. As I write Saturday and Sunday are sold out, with just a scant smattering of tickets remaining for Friday.

The only reason I can think of for Friday not being clean is fear…. and for good reason. Malnourished hipsters can only foresee their own death at the hands of the reformed Jesus Lizard. There’s not a front man in music like David Yow. The manic Texan comes off like a Pentecostal preacher assigned to build a church in hell. The fact that they’re one of my favorite bands is not something I want to think about too much. On either side of the Lizard Friday on old people night is another fave of mine Yo La Tengo and the enigmatic Built To Spill. The way the schedule works out we should be able to see all three. Bully for us.

ATP New York adds Iron & Wine, Deerhunter to lineup

1 05 2009

We were already pumped about getting to see the Jesus Lizard at both the Pitchfork Music Festival and All Tomorrow’s Parties, but the latter event is making us even more excited with recent additions Iron & Wine, Deerhunter, Boss Hog, No Age, Caribou and Deerhoof joining this year’s already-impressive roster (Suicide, Animal Collective, The Flaming Lips, The Feelies).

Actually to be honest, we’re more looking forward to just checking out the scene in general — in it’s second year, ATP New York is held at Kutsher’s Country Club in Monticello, NY, which is the site rumored to be the inspiration for “Dirty Dancing.” We hear it’s almost an eerie, out-dated experience that we definitely need to see first hand. So check out this year’s full lineup, and we’ll see you there. And who knows, maybe we’ll carry a watermelon.
