The Olympics Of Cool

Even if the luge and team short track speed skating aren’t your thing, the music lineup for next February’s Winter Olympics in Vancouver is top notch and surprisingly adventurous.

My New Dream. Renew My Vows With Kim Gordon Officiating

Sonic Youth made their bizarre appearance on Gossip Girl this week. Full disclosure. I’ve never watched Gossip Girl and have no stinking clue what the show is about. I rather like my life that way. It seems there was a wedding and Kim Gordon played an internet certified minister. After the ceremony the band played an unplugged version of “Star Power.” When my wife and I are ready to get all squishy and renew our vows, I want Kim Gordon to do ours too. (editor’s note. Bri has trouble separating fantasy from reality. We’re pretty certain Kim Gordon is not actually an ordained minister.) They’ve done a nice job scrubbing the scene from You Tube, but you can watch it here.

Bonus Coverage. “Star Power” as God intended:

Bri Blahg… Jacko Could Heal Hitler And Other Offensive Eye Grabbing Headlines. Music News Round Up 9/25/09

AEG President Says Jacko Film Vindication

Come on man I surely don’t believe you killed Michael Jackson. Signing him for 50 shows? That’s just putting the gun to your own head and pulling the trigger. “This Is It,” the Zapruder Film of concert flicks got a press roll out in New York Thursday.

Just In Time For Jackson Film… Jacko’s Nazi Fixation

Michael Jackson told a Rabbi he could heal Hitler. It’s all in a new book taken from 30 hours of bizarre ramblings The King Of Pop had with Rabbi Shmuley Boteach. I don’t need to read the stinking book now, there’s nothing in there that can top that.

Austin City Limits Set For Huge 35th Season

When we were in Austin for South By Southwest last March we walked by Austin City Limits’ new digs a few times. It looked quite impressive. Equally compelling is their upcoming season. Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, Them Crooked Vultures, Elvis Costello, and Willie Nelson head up the list.

Bonus Coverage. Rolling Stone has a profile on Merle Haggard I’m digging this week on my trips to the can. (I have to hide it because Megan Fox is on the cover and I don’t want folks getting the wrong idea.) He’s a true living giant of music. Here’s Merle several years ago on Austin City Limits:

More Bonus Coverage. Rolling Stone recently ran a stunning piece on former Cream drummer Ginger Baker. The Independent in Ireland ran the story as well, but there’s is a more fleshed out version. I had no idea Baker was such a loon…. A genius that’s true, but cream crackers nuts too. I highly recommend you read it.

Bri Blahg: What Kanye Should Have Done. Music News Round Up 9/14/09

This Just In: Kanye West Is Kind Of An Asshole

Someday I’ll look so stinking old that no one will bother to ask me if I watched The MTV Video Music Awards. I suppose I should feel good that it hasn’t happened yet. The answer of course is no. Why?

1. Are you kidding me?

2. Bears/Packers

3. I was out of Jim Beam.

This morning the blahgspere, twitspere, fakebookspere, etc are all in a spit flying frenzy about Kanye West. It seems he jumped on stage and dissed Taylor Swift about winning some damn award or another.

I will tell you this; Bears fans would have been pleased if Kanye had grabbed the ball from Jay Cutler last night instead. Cripes was he awful. Since I didn’t watch, here then is EMO GIRL with his commentary.

hit the jump for the sad, sad video…

Bri Blahg… Helping People, That’s What I Do. Music News Round Up: 9/9/09

That’s A Good Question Bri

Can you still be gangsta after going on Oprah? In fairness to Jay Z he is promoting his Friday charity concert. To help Jay maintain his hardness, here’s his mugshot courtesy The Smoking Gun:

Jay Z Wishing He Was At A Grizzly Bear Concert

That was snapped by NYPD in 1999 after Jay Z’s arrest on charges he stabbed a record executive. He probably had it coming right.

The Good News Is, I Now Know Who The Hell You Are

Rapper Max B (full disclosure, I had no idea who this guy was until today. See Max B knew exactly what he was doing) had 75 years dropped on his noggin last week for a robbery gone very bad. Bonus irony: It seems Max B had just extricated himself from a bad contract. Don’t worry about Max though, he’s just signed a new long term deal.

Our own Jill Menze fought her way into the now infamous Girl Talk show over the weekend in Brooklyn. Brooklyn Vegan were there as well. I wish people still went this nuts for people who play instruments. That would be cool.

Chewbacca Dancing To Girl Talk At Bonnaroo

Cameron Crowe’s new clip for Pearl Jam’s “The Fixer” is out. The bits and pieces of the album I’ve heard are encouraging.

Kiss have announced their 35th anniversary tour. They’ve actually been together longer than that, but why quibble. And now the funniest Kiss video ever “World Without Heroes” from their concept album Music From The Elder. Watch to the end and see Gene cry from all the money they spent making this truly goofy record:

Bri Blahg Bonnaroo Saturday And Sunday

8 05 2009

It’s part two of our two part peek at The Bonnaroo 2009 schedule.

If Alejandro Escovedo plays “2am Pissed Off” I’ll be ecstatic. It’s perhaps the most harrowing song about substance abuse ever written. It knocks me over every time I hear it. Escovedo starts my day at That Tent Saturday. We saw Elvis Perkins two years ago jamming in the press tent with Cold War Kids. I’ll never forget it. I hope to catch at least the end of his set in This Tent early afternoon. Robyn Hitchock and The Venus 3 follow Perkins. Officially The Venus 3 includes R.E.M.’s Peter Buck. Will he be in the band that day? We’ll see. Regardless I’ve never seen Hitchcock do a bad show. Many will crowd This Tent late afternoon for Of Montreal, but I can’t resist the charms of Jenny Lewis over at That Tent. Choices must be made.

My evening will commence with Wilco on the giant What Stage before ducking out to see Elvis Costello. The bespectled one has played the ‘Roo before, but never alone. He will in That Tent Saturday. The Decemberists and Mars Volta will pull me apart in geographic and stylistic directions. The evening ends with Bruce Springsteen and The E-Street Band playing their historic first ever Bonnaroo set. Much like Metallica last year, they’ll be playing for a lot of people who aren’t their hardcore fans. I’m sure The Boss will be up for the challenge.

By noon on Sunday exhaustion will start to set in. I’ll be long and hopelessly caked in ‘Roo grit (unless it rains, then it’ll be ‘Roo mud). Thank God for Ted Leo and The Pharmicists. That’s the band to get me going again at 1:30 in The Other Tent. Hopefully we’ll be interviewing Jessica Lea Mayfield sometime Sunday. We keep getting turned down. We’ll be nice Jessica, we’re fans! Whatever happens I am not missing her after Ted Leo at Cafe Where. Between three and six I’ll be all over the map. A bit of Erykah Badu on What Stage, a dash of Andrew Bird, on Which Stage, a smidgen of Okkervil River back in The Other Tent, and I can’t miss outlaw legend Merle Haggard who takes over This Tent at 5pm.

Most likely we’ll hit the road before Phish’s second show, but not before the spine tingling Band Of Horses and the devastating Neko Case at This Tent.

I hope you can join us, but if not we’ll be all over this thing.
