Bri Blahg… Twit Tweets Tweet Sized Album Reviews

Atlas Sound "Logos"

Look, you’re busy. I’m busy. I’ve got to worry about the economy, and figure out how I’m going to hide from mandatory Swine Flu inoculations. I don’t even have time to sue the government, though I suspect I’d like to.

I have a stack of new records to listen to and then write 5,000 words each on why you should: A. Like them. B. Loathe them. C. Not give a shit. Since ‘C’ is the most likely scenario (is not giving a shit a scenario?) I’ve decided to boil down several into 140 words or less. That way you can copy and paste on your Twitter feed. Feel free to take credit for any and all… I’ll be in hiding and they’ll take you away instead. Sucker.

Atlas Sound “Logos”

Deerhunter leader new solo. The cover says much. A shirtless Cox face bathed in heavenly light. Music sounds like that light.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Bri Blahg… Punches, Divorces, and Bad Wigs. Music News Round Up 10/15/09

15 10 2009

by Brian Phillips (@BrianBlahg)

Some guy punched Leona Lewis during a UK book signing. Why? Not sure.

Oh My God You Guys

Avril Lavigne has filed for divorce. Isn’t she like 15?

Bonus Coverage. She’s petitioned the court to deny her estranged husband spousal support. That’s ok he doesn’t need the money, he’s in Sum 41. Oh that’s cold Avril.

More bonus coverage. Here’s something to ponder…. Who’s the bigger Canadian music star now? Avril or Anvil?

Bizarro Chart

Some clown named Michael Buble is Number 1. Good for him. Number 2? Kiss! Say what you will, but for some bands the Wal-Mart exclusive is career Viagra. The entire Billboard 200 is here. If you dig down far enough you can find out how much people don’t give a shit about Scarlett Johansson as a singer.

But What About Chris Gaines?!

Garth Brooks says he’s putting on his cowgirdle, and coming out of retirement.

Bonus Coverage. My theory is he’s waited this long to give the public time to forget about Chris Gaines. Think again pardner:

Atlas Sound, the side project of Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox, scored a sleepy hit with last year’s debut, “Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See but Cannot Feel.” Now the ever-prolific Cox is back with its follow-up, “Logos,” due Oct. 20 via Kranky. While “Blind” offered lush, ambient soundscapes from the intimacy of Cox’s bedroom, he promises the new effort is not the same, this time opting to collaborate with members of Animal Collective and Stereolab. Our inbox this morning found a nice note from Cox describing the album, posted in full, along with the tracklist, after the jump.

Bri Blahg… Lollapalooza 2009 Schedule Out

18 06 2009

Passion Pit @ Bonnaroo 2009 photo by Brian Phillips

Passion Pit “The Reeling”

Hard to believe Bonnaroo started a week ago already. For one guy it ended. Apparently clean up crews found a body on Tuesday…. almost 48 hours after the festival ended. Damn. Didn’t anyone wonder where he went?

“Hey where’s Bill?”

“I think he went to get a burrito or something.”

“When was that?”

“Um, like two days ago during Phish.”

Let’s try to do better at Lollapalooza people. Have a buddy system.

The Lollapalooza performance schedule is out. Let’s lace up the combat boots and stomp right in and see if we can find anything to do the first full weekend of August in Chicago’s Grant Park. Here’s some things I’m looking forward to.

ATP New York adds Iron & Wine, Deerhunter to lineup

1 05 2009

We were already pumped about getting to see the Jesus Lizard at both the Pitchfork Music Festival and All Tomorrow’s Parties, but the latter event is making us even more excited with recent additions Iron & Wine, Deerhunter, Boss Hog, No Age, Caribou and Deerhoof joining this year’s already-impressive roster (Suicide, Animal Collective, The Flaming Lips, The Feelies).

Actually to be honest, we’re more looking forward to just checking out the scene in general — in it’s second year, ATP New York is held at Kutsher’s Country Club in Monticello, NY, which is the site rumored to be the inspiration for “Dirty Dancing.” We hear it’s almost an eerie, out-dated experience that we definitely need to see first hand. So check out this year’s full lineup, and we’ll see you there. And who knows, maybe we’ll carry a watermelon.

Noise Pop ’09: Deerhunter Open Fest

25 02 2009

Deerhunter packed the Mezannine for a free concert at the opening night party of Noisepop on Tuesday. A depressing performance by opening act Lilofee, who’s sound strangely marries Depeche Mode’s snyth sounds with the reverb loops and electric rhythms of experimental rock, led the crowd to booze and mingle in anticipation of the marquee act. As fans jockied for position before the show, a video graphics display of epileptically distorted clips from tiger attacks, explosions viewed in rewind, and the films Logan’s Run and The Warriors entertained the crowd.

The Deerhunter set began as their songs often do: quietly, with an atmospheric undulation of timbre, the shadow of reverb looped before gradually ascending towards the heights of experimental intensity. The gaunt, pale figure of lead singer Bradford Cox embodies this aesthetic. His arms spindly and skeletal, his eyes sunk, his cheekbones pronouced, he looks as if his body will soon pass into ether. Cox grounds this tenuously connected whisper of self with a maudlin mouth and frenetic sense of stage humor. As the end of the show approached, the band amplified the equalizer’s high to earsplitting effect, the looped reverb now a concussive ringing. This sound underlay the entire 15 minute encore, a tantric tinnitus ringing in audience ears long after the band’s final exit.

Cal-Berkeley student Adam Planas checked out Deerhunter’s opening night set at Mezzanine last night, and captured these great shots of the Atlanta indie-rockers.
