Paul Marshall: Not splitting up with himself

26 10 2009

Back in March we chatted up Leeds UK singer/songwriter Paul Marshall. Paul had just finished an encouraging 2008; a year that saw him sign to the Bella Union label and open a few shows for the enchanting Bat For Lashes. For Marshall it was the culmination of a lot of hard work, intense self-doubt, and touring continental Europe with his ski masked industrial metal duo.

As I write Marshall is recording, and says:

The new record is shaping up to be quite a change from the acoustics of Vultures and will feature a lot more instruments, loops, percussion etc and is actually heading down the band route in many ways. It’s not going to be RADICALLY different, i.e. songs like ‘Cross Stitched Lips’ will be on there and ‘We Could Use Your Blood’ will finally get to see the light of day.
It is due to this and the fact that i have a fucking boring name that the name ‘Paul Marshall’ is going to be thrown out and this album is going to be released under a new guise which will be revealed later.

I know your mileage will vary on this one…. I’m a natural born skeptic myself…. That said it’s pretty creepy.

Bonus Coverage:

Flaming Lips To Do Dark Side With Henry Rollins

The follow up to The Flaming Lips new and very Floydish “Embryonic” is ambitious to say the least. The band is planning to cover Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side Of The Moon” with guests Henry Rollins and Peaches.

Our own Jill Menze fought her way into the now infamous Girl Talk show over the weekend in Brooklyn. Brooklyn Vegan were there as well. I wish people still went this nuts for people who play instruments. That would be cool.

Cameron Crowe’s new clip for Pearl Jam’s “The Fixer” is out. The bits and pieces of the album I’ve heard are encouraging.

Kiss have announced their 35th anniversary tour. They’ve actually been together longer than that, but why quibble. And now the funniest Kiss video ever “World Without Heroes” from their concept album Music From The Elder. Watch to the end and see Gene cry from all the money they spent making this truly goofy record:

Bat For Lashes

Bat For Lashes leader Natasha Kahn may be a friendly unassuming former pre school teacher when you speak to her, but she turns into something entirely different on stage. The enchanting Kahn seemed to even conjure up the wind when we saw her at Lollapalooza. Tonight she casts her spell on you at The Parish in Austin.

Bri Blahg… Giant Heat Stroked Lollapalooza Wrap Up

And that’s it. Lollapalooza 2009 is history. We saw a little of everything this weekend. I swear it was down right chilly Friday. It was raining I know that. Saturday and Sunday were different stories. We got a good lather going by the end of the weekend. Lollapalooza adjusted though. Yesterday the Chicago Fire Department brought in a truck with a giant fan on top to spray mist. This ain’t a bad town if the fire department has a damn misting truck. I’m going to roll through some highlights here. I’m one man though and there’s so much I missed. I saw quite a lot too.

Friday

I raced to the BMI stage just in time to catch a wisp of April Smith. She’s somethin’, and a mean dresser too. Smith was kind enough to take us on a tour of the site seeing as how we just got there and all. April received as much as she gave in the form of Lobster Corn Dogs.

After watching nine year old Yuto Miyazawa play “Paranoid” by Sabbath on the Kidzapalooza stage a late Portland, Oregon band Hockey tried to make it work on The Playstation Stage. Unfortunately the power went out and they couldn’t get through their first number. The men were good sports in the media area later and told us about how Bruce Springsteen doesn’t pay attention when you meet him.
