Blk Jks (Black Jacks)

A band we got geeked about at SXSW is getting some love.

Blk Jks are, I’m certain, the only South African band on Bloomington, Indiana’s spunky Secretly Canadian record label. Rolling Stone just gave their latest a nice write up. The men celebrate with a record release show at S.O.B.’s in New York.

Thank God for The Spits.

The Seattle band bring order to chaos with their taut two minute fish slaps. Four times just today they became my new favorite band. They’re at The Beachland in Cleveland Tuesday.

The Shins recently went through some upheaval. Joining the band just this year was Eric Johnson of The Fruit Bats.

Johnson is keeping his acclaimed band The Fruit Bats alive though with a the acclaimed “The Ruminant Band” and the tour behind it reaches Exit/Inn Nashville tonight.

Master folk blues guitar player Jack Rose prefers the first take.

When you play like Jack Rose your whole life can be first take, no overdubs. Rose swings through Atlanta and a joint called Eyedrum tonight.

I don’t know when they found the time.

Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey have a new e.p. hitting in one week. Tonight they’ll feature some of that new material at Winston’s in San Diego.

Kristen Ward just played Seattle’s Bumbershoot Festival over the weekend.

Tonight she and some special guests play tribute to Patsy Cline at The Triple Door.
