ComFest 2009!! Preview.

26 06 2009

Palestra.net World Headquarters are located in Columbus, Ohio. How convenient! It just so happens that America’s longest running, all volunteer music festival is this weekend.

Columbus Community Festival or in the local vernacular, Comfest runs Friday through Sunday. Quite a few artists we’ve covered are performing this weekend. Perhaps we can help fill up your dance card.

Recommended artists video performances and interviews after the jump…

Friday afternoon Ryan Smith kicks things off early. This video is from our “vault”. It’s for Ryan’s song “Swimming” which was on his debut solo album “Neil Avenue”, and we shot it around the house Ryan recorded the record in.

Good to see The Josh Krajcik Band up and running. They have a mid afternoon slot on The Bozo stage Friday. We did this on the band a couple of years back.

If you haven’t met Joe Camerlengo of This Is My Suitcase yet, you really should. He’s more or less the happiest person in music. Together with his band they’ll be playing tracks from album “The Keys To Cat Heaven.” The kids will be out for their 7pm Friday show on The Bozo Stage. Here’s Joe solo and acoustic performing the title track from the album at Relay Recording.

As long as we’re talking “Happy” a local legend has put together a band for his Friday Bozo Stage appearance. Happy Harold Chichester dates back to the Royal Crescent Mob, Howlin Maggie, and The Twilight Singers with Afghan Whig Greg Dulli. Lord knows what Happy has cooked up for Friday, but I can assure you it will be great. He’s on at 8:10 Friday. We shot this intimate performance of “Moonlight” in Happy’s Columbus, OH studio.

No band in Columbus tours harder than roots rockers Two Cow Garage. We shot their entire August 2007 show live, and they let us drink from their backstage PBR stash. Thanks fellas! Two Cow Garage headline Bozo at 10:10 Friday night.

Oh oh…. Another favorite is on at exactly the same time Friday. The Floorwalkers top the lineup on The Gazebo Stage. We grabbed them for a Relay Recording Session last year.

Saturday our pal Colin Gawel has his band The Lonely Bones assembled for only their second ever Columbus live show. Since they played live at The Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame earlier in June I’m sure they can handle their afternoon slot on the Gazebo Stage Saturday.

The Receiver’s “Length Of Arms” album is being showered with critical praise. We chatted with the brothers Cooper about the project several months ago.

Sunday it’s all about Megan Palmer. The registered nurse might have to treat herself for exhaustion Sunday. First Megan Palmer And The Hopefuls play at 6pm on The Gazebo Stage. Following that gig Palmer is due on stage with The Spikedrivers just after 8pm on Sunday to close Comfest 2009. Megan did one of our first Relay Recording Sessions in 2008.

There are so many other great artists playing this weekend. Brainbow, Willie Phoenix, Grafton, Flotation Walls, Bookmobile, The Kyle Sowashes… I could go on and on.

We’ll be lurking around Comfest all weekend at Columbus’ Goodale Park. We’ll be the people drinking the giant beers. Yeah that narrows it down a bit right? Have fun!
