Ohio? Yup Ohio!

Our drunken raging uncle of an economy seems to have spared the Spring and Summer Festival biz. SXSW seemed as crowded as ever, Coachella was reportedly a raging success, and Bonnaroo seems on course to at least equal last summer. Perhaps you’ve forgotten but we were paying $4.00 plus a gallon a year ago and they were still close to capacity then.

Ohio, home to Palestra World Headquarters has quietly become home to a strong second tier of festivals too. There’s something for every taste it seems. Here’s a few we’ll be covering in the next few weeks.

The Nelsonville Music Festival returns to the small Ohio town on the edge of Appalachia May 15-17. The Fifth Annual has already moved double the tickets of any previous installment. Willie Nelson is a big reason why. He’s the Saturday night headliner. Mudhoney was added recently to top the bill Friday. Other featured performers include T-Model Ford, Alela Diane, Wayne Hancock, and Jolie Holland.

We chatted with Tim Peacock, Executive Director of Stuart’s Opera House, about the 2009 Nelsonville Music Fest.

That same weekend, 70 some miles to the northwest in Columbus it’s the third annual Rock On The Range. The two day hard rock and metal throwdown features Slipknot, Motley Crue, Flyleaf, Alice In Chains, Avenged Sevenfold, Buckcherry and a bunch of others to Columbus Crew Stadium. This year it’s Saturday May 16 and Sunday May 17.

And in Thornville, Ohio just to the East of Columbus it’s the 31st Hookahville Festival May 23rd and 24th. Long running Ohio Jam Band Ekoostik Hookahville has a strong lineup this year. Les Claypool, The Wailers, Toubab Crewe, and Freekbass among others join the band for two days of music and camping. Ekoostik Hookah is planning two four hour sets too.

Here’s a taste of Hookah’s 2007 show…

We’ll be lurking at all three.
