SXSW Preview: Manchester Orchestra Super Secret NYC Showcase

6 03 2009

During our recent sweep through New York we were able to scam, cajole, and massage our way into an industry heavy Manchester Orchestra showcase at The Mercury Lounge March 4th. Matt Pinfield was there.

I have to tell you I was a bit shaken by how slam bang the band sounded. I mean that in a good way though. Manchester Orchestra are exploring that whole soft/loud dynamic made famous by Nirvana. Where Kurt Kobain was singing from his inflamed gut though, frontman Andy Hull seems to be channeling his lyrics. He is a compelling young performer.

At the beginning of the show the room was swollen to capacity. The important people left early though, and I was able to get dangerously close. The set was like 45 minutes. Where else do you have to be? Thought so.

I look forward to the album. “Mean Everything To Nothing” drops April 21.
